I bought this book on the strength of the sample photos. Unfortunately, they were the best of the book. The rest were disappointing. Although the book is 94 pages, there are only 44 photos. Most of the pages contain just a title or a silly poem. I'm not sure why this was done, but the word 'padding' comes to mind. Very few of the photos are truly inspiring. As another reviewer said, they are kind of boring.

In the same shipment I received Working the Light by Joe Cornish, full of really stunning photos from various photographers. Highly recommended.

This is the perfect book to give as a gift or keep as a prized posession on your coffee table. The photos of the Sierras are stunning, and the poetry interspersed throughout is lovely. I plan on giving this book to friends for birthdays, Christmas, etc. Anybody who loves to spend time in nature will cherish Brilliant Waters.

This book has some very nice and perhaps unique photographic compositions, and it's perhaps worth buying the book for that alone. But I couldn't get past the almost phony or Thomas-Kincade-like appearance of many (certainly not all) of the photos.

If I want to look at paintings I'd rather buy the work of the painter or a book of reproductions. When I buy a photo book of landscapes, where it is being represented that the photos are real representations of actual places and times, that's what I want to see, not cotton-candied, smoothed over prettied-up versions. I suspect that a little too much balancing light and dark areas or messing with contrast values in Photoshop is the culprit, or perhaps something in the chain between the photo digital file and the book printer. A prime example is the cover photo.

However, I suppose that the way the photos look in the book is what the photographer intended, and represents her vision of what her artistic goals are, and that certainly is valid, but just not my taste. I suspect most people will not agree with my opinion, and that is fine, but like I titled this review - it's a contrarian opinion.

This book is beautiful - the photographs are stunning, and have a strong sense of personal creative vision. I own many landscape photography books, and this instantly became one of my favorites, its images are serene but powerful and take you to a distant place. They go far beyond simply documenting a location, and clearly show the artist's vision and love for these places. If you enjoy landscape or these places, this book shoulds not be missed!

Review by W. H. Rating:
The creative mind of author Alan Cook certainly has few rivals--his stories are cleaver, different and always entertaining to the highest degree. His latest novel " Honeymoon For Three" is no exception. This book is full of high-energy suspense with a plot that will capture the reader's attention.

Cook has a creative touch with how he developments each character in his stories. They are not some cardboard cookie cutter mystery genre stereotypes. Each of them come alive and catches your imagination and attention no matter how big they play in the plot. This is the authors' signature strength and separates him from the hordes of other small market writers.

The book takes you on a journey across country with a honeymoon couple and a insane and obsessive stalker. It is a tale that is both unusual and scary and well worth spending your time reading this book. "The American Authors Association" gives this book its highest rating of FIVE STARS!

The second of the Gary Blanchard stories, Honeymoon for Three continues the theme of ordinary - and somewhat naive - young people besieged by the unstable phantoms of high school. Previously, Gary was beset by an obsessed relative seeking fortune and revenge. This time, it is his bride, Penny, who must contend with a renewed high school acquaintance and the innuendo of moral compromise. Gary must remember that he, himself, has a less than innocent dating past (though somehow this gets described as the girlfriend's "sin," not his). Filtered through the lense of 1964, this story portrays a more delicately worded, though no less complex, discussion of sexual politics than my generation would have. That the discussion takes place in tents and campers from the California Coast to Yellowstone makes it all the more fun.
The story also raises a modern theme reminiscent of Columbine and the recent novel Nineteen Minutes -- what is the result of kindness to or, conversely, ridicule of a fellow high school student who just doesn't fit in. Despite the chilling circumstances portrayed in this tale, I have to believe that Penny's non-conformist friendliness remains the way to approach the world.
Gary Blanchard meets Penny, the love of his life, through a computer dating service called "Human Inventory." He knows she loves him when she wants to watch him bowl. After all, bowling is a boring game to watch.

The couple is on the trip of their lifetime. They stopped in Reno to get married before visiting several National Parks. What they did not know was that they were not going alone.

Alfred Ward is obsessed with his former high school mate, Penny. He is also obsessed with bellybuttons. Women have never been attracted to him; he blames all his tribulations on his outie. From peeping in her window, he knows that Penny has the perfect innie bellybutton and flat tummy to go with it.

Someone has been sending notes to Penny, scary notes. She has no reason to suspect Alfred. When the notes and calls had not stopped the growing relationship between Penny and Gary, Alfred knows more drastic measures will be necessary. He will stop at nothing to win the love of his life, not even murder.

What ensues is a dynamic and amusing adventure as Alfred follows the newlyweds from National Park to National Park.

"Honeymoon For Three," by Alan Cook, is a delightful tale! Mr. Cook has an amazing talent for creating suspense and tension in his plot. Alfred is insane. Penny is sharp and a quick thinker. Cook uses engaging supporting characters, like Don, Rowanda and Mattie, throughout the scheme, to enhance the storyline. The scene at the wedding chapel is one of my favorites. Cook does a beautiful job describing the National Parks, including bears. I recommend "Honeymoon For Three" fans of mystery and suspense.

“Honeymoon For Three,” by Alan Cook, is a delightful tale! I recommend “Honeymoon For Three” fans of mystery and suspense.

I was captivated from page 1. I'll never think about belly buttons the same way again. Cook really got into that obsessed killer's mind and portrayed him very believably. The buildup to the ending kept me reading with my breath held. My interest was sustained throughout. Al Cook is an excellent writer with a masterful touch for the mystery genre.

I have enjoyed other books in the "story behind the scenery" series and wanted to share with my children the riches of Lake Tahoe before we go there for another vacation. This book was wonderful! We have been there before, but we learned things about Lake Tahoe we had never heard before. The pictures are beautiful and true to the real place. The kids asked so many questions from the pictures that it was great that all the answers were available in the pages. We are now interested in visiting specific sites and participating in certain activites because of the thorough information and history covered in this book. Anyone interested in the history of the Lake Tahoe area should give this book a read!
